Course Description
Silloth on Solway is a key tourist attraction in the coastal Cumbrian town of Silloth.
David Grant laid out the original course in 1892 and, since then, it has evolved with the input of world-renowned architects Dr Alister MacKenzie and Willie Park Jnr.
The course features a number of blind holes, which are a source of uncertainty, surprise and occasional delight to generations of members and visitors.
The ninth hole is an excellent par-3, where an elevated tee box looks down on a small green with a steep fall to the right and protected to the front and side by an array of deep bunkers.
The par-5 13th, meanwhile, is the signature hole and features a drive over banks of heather to a deceptively wide fairway. A tight second through a narrow gully, into the prevailing wind, must negotiate an angled slope that deflects all but the most accurate of approaches to an elevated green at the top of a ridge.
The course has received plenty of praise down the years and, after making his first visit to the course in 1925, the great golf writer Bernard Darwin wrote: “I never more violently fell in love with a course at first sight.â€
